Last  week, Georgia School Superintendent Kathy Cox sent a letter to the Long County Board of Education recognizing all system schools as Title 1 Distinguished Schools.
Smiley Elementary School has earned the status for five consecutive years and Walker Middle School has been recognized for three years. Long County High School was recognized for the first time this year.
For attaining the Title 1 designation for two consecutive years, Smiley and Walker received an award of $712 each.
According to Cox, for a school to attain the status, it must meet the Adequate Yearly Progress requirements under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002 for three years in a row.
Long County was one of 49 school systems out of 189 in the state that had all schools in the district make AYP.
