Long schools get $2.9M in brigade offset funds

The Long County Board of Education on Wednesday received a check for $2,921,105 from the Coastal Regional Commission/Office of Economic Adjustment.
Superintendent Dr. Robert Waters said the money serves as remediation funding for several projects that were completed in preparation for a planned fifth brigade at Fort Stewart.
In 2009, the Army reversed its decision to station the new brigade on Fort Stewart, and $40 million in remediation funding was made available to governments in Liberty, Bryan, Tattnall and Long counties to lessen the negative financial impact.
“Man, we’re so glad to be getting this money. Our school system did a lot in preparing for more students, and this check will really help. I also want to say, on behalf of the entire school system, we appreciate Jack Kingston and all of the others who pushed for these remediation funds,” Waters said.
The money will go toward the construction costs of the new high school.
The system was the last governmental entity in Long County that had requested remediation funding. The Long County Commission received approximately $2.7 million, and the city of Ludowici received approximately $90,000.
