Fort Stewart has three elementary schools on post and all are preparing to welcome back students while dealing with furloughs for the 2013-14 school year.
Registration for students started June 10 and will continue from 8 a.m.-noon Monday through Friday until July 30. The first day of classes is Aug. 1, but registration will continue for new students, starting at 9 a.m. Students registering that day will start their school year Friday, Aug. 2.
New registrants now are required to bring the following documents to registration:
• Sponsor’s military orders
• Lease or memorandum from housing office verifying residence or residency assignment within 90 days
• Student’s original birth certificate or certified copy (If a sponsor is not shown on the birth certificate, additional information will be required, such as a marriage license or custody documentation.)
• School records (or report card showing student has been promoted)
• Georgia Certificate of immunization (form 3231)
• Georgia certificate of ear, eye and dental (Form 3300)
• Fort Stewart Schools registration forms
• Names, addresses and telephone numbers for sponsor, spouse, emergency contacts, command POC’s and next of kin
Many of the documents required to register can be found and downloaded online at http://www.am.dodea.edu/stewart/shared/communityinfo/pcs.html.
Children who are 4 on or before Sept. 1 are eligible to register for pre-kindergarten. Children must be 5 on or before Sept. 1 to enroll in kindergarten and must be 6 on or before Sept. 1 for elementary school.
During the 2010-11 school year, the DoDEA added a new immunization requirement. All currently enrolled students, as well as new students to the school, will be required to receive two doses of the varicella (chickenpox) vaccine.
Due to sequestration and recent budget cuts, the Department of Defense Education Activity sent letters out outlining the furlough days the on-post education system will observe should sequestration be in place during the school year. Most DoDEA civilian employees will be furloughed for up to 11 days. Teachers and some school-level support staff maybe furloughed up to five days. The dates implemented by the DoDEA are Aug. 30 and Sept. 6, 13, 20 and 27.
Based on information posted on Fort Stewart’s website, school hours vary slightly between each school.
