On Feb. 27, Mayors Don Emmons of Midway and William Austin of Riceboro visited Midway Middle School to sign an official proclamation declaring March 3-7 National School Breakfast Week.
The School Breakfast Program has served schools across the country since 1975. The program has been joined by other child nutrition programs over the yeas to provide children with a healthy breakfast.
"Fuel Your Imagination," a campaign sponsored by www.schoolbreakfast.org, was designed to teach children the importance of eating breakfast and why eating breakfast at school will benefit them. Children who eat breakfast score better on standardized tests, have better classroom behavior, and have fewer health issues.
Fun names were given to the breakfast items for March 3-7, including 'Pluto pancakes,' 'cosmic toast,' and 'applesauce galactica.'
Dr. Christine Draffin, Liberty County School nutrition director, said, "They're the same breakfast foods, but we wanted to make it fun."
The children will also receive a "got breakfast?" bracelet to wear.
