Liberty County Board of Elections Interim Supervisor Ronda Walthour said things at the polls went smooth. The few minor bumps were technical issues with a printer here and there that were easily fixed and folks showing up to the wrong polling site.
“We need to better educate the public where to go next time,” Walthour said.
As of 3 p.m. 2,205 citizens had voted in person. She said the normally busy Liberty County Community Complex in Midway had a steady stream of voters going in and out of the building, but Walthour said 51 percent of that precinct, alone, had taken advantage of early voting.
“And I’m grateful that they did so they wouldn’t have to stand in longer lines today,” Walthour said. “It’s making for an easier Election Day.”
In all Liberty County has 13 precincts and Walthour said more than 5,000 absentee ballots had been turned in. She said poll workers would be collecting the remaining ballots from the drop boxes once the polls closed at 7 p.m.
She said they began early tabulation of the absentee ballots Oct. 21 and Oct. 28. That means they won’t be as overwhelmed in getting as many of the remaining ballots tabulated as soon as possible.
“That makes it a whole lot easier on us tonight,” she said. Walthour is trying to get the remaining ballots tabulated by 11 p.m.
She said folks did a great job in getting their Absentee ballots back in.
Walthour said more work needs to be done in ensuring military personnel know where they are registered to vote. She said some soldiers were showing up to local polls only to discover they were not eligible to vote at that location.
