Evacuation after gas line broken

Workers clearing trees along Washington Avenue in Hinesville Thursday evening accidentally caused a small gas leak and the short evacuation of residents in the area.
Hinesville City Manager Billy Edwards said workers were "doing some removal in conjunction with our Memorial Drive/Washington Avenue realignment project. Apparently, there was a gas line running through the roots of a tree that had to removed and when that tree was removed it broke the gas line."
Edwards said the leak led to the evacuation of "a small residential area" near the broken line, but residents were promptly allowed to return to their homes after about 30 minutes.
Officials from the Hinesville Fire Department, Police Department and Liberty-Hinesville Emergency Management Agency responded to the scene.
