Wayne fire
Firefighters battle a house fire in nearby Wayne County.

According to Chief Ashley Dent of the Madray Springs Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, a home located on 900 Bethlehem Wesleyan Church Road in Wayne County was heavily damaged in an early morning fire on Sunday.

According to Dent an elderly woman had to be pulled from the home through her bedroom window by another resident of the home. The woman who has not been identified sustained cuts and smoke inhalation and taken to a local area hospital.

Dent said when firefighters arrived the two story home was 50 percent engulfed in flames. Although two bedrooms were saved, the home may be considered a total loss. The origin of the fire is currently under investigation.

Dent said the fire was knocked down within 20 minutes. The fire department was notified around 10:30 a.m. Sunday. The names of a number of residents that were displaced have not yet been released.

Half a dozen units who assisted in fighting the blaze included Madray Springs Volunteer, Jesup, Gardi, Odum Long State, and Screven.
