Former Liberty County Commissioner Don Carter died Monday afternoon.
The co-owner of Carter Funeral Homes had reportedly been in a hospital since before Christmas. The cause of death had not been reported by late Monday afternoon.
Carter, whose mother, Hazel Carter, was a powerhouse in county politics for years, served on the commission in the early 1990s. His brother, Sanford Carter, who he co-owned the string of area funeral homes with, was Liberty County coroner for years.
In recent years, Don Carter was known for his charitable work, including for the Lisa Marie Carter Cardiac Rehabilitation Center at Liberty Regional Medical Center. The center was named for Carter's daughter, who was killed in a car wreck.
