UPDATE: Hunters find woman's body near Riceboro
Crime scene tape

Authorities are trying to determine the identity of a woman whose body was discovered by hunters Friday night near the Barrington Ferry Road water tower.

According to an incident report filed by Liberty County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Anthony Brown, the body was found in a ditch on an unnamed road shortly before 5 p.m.

According to the report, the hunter who notified authorities had just shot a deer which ran off.  While searching for the deer, they discovered the body of a white female unclothed in a ditch on Weyerhaeser Paper Company property.

A knife was discovered near the scene, the report states. However, the cause of death has not been released and it is unknown if the discovery of the knife played a part in the woman’s death.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said an autopsy on the woman’s body was scheduled to be conducted Tuesday at the GBI crime lab in Pooler.

The GBI did make an attempt Friday to determine the identity of the woman without any success.
