According to Long County Sheriff’s Deputy Mark Hall, Sharmila Melissa Powell, 30, who was recently arrested in connection with a shooting in Jesup, applied for a permit to carry a concealed weapon on Nov. 2 - 11 days earlier.
According to Hall, the request for the permit was accepted, and then Powell was finger printed, as all applicants are. But according to Long County Probate Judge, Marie Middleton, Powell’s request had to be denied on the 5th, due to her having a previous record.
When asked about Powell’s record, Middleton said she could not disclose that information.
But she did provide reasons why a person may be denied that type of permit, saying, “Anyone who has a drug conviction will be denied, and if a person has a conviction of a violent crime, they will usually be denied.”
Some Middleton cited for being denied were forcible felonies, such as aggravated assault, and even misdemeanor convictions, such as simple battery.
Powell who resided in the north side of Long County in the area of Smiley Cross Roads, was arrested with her husband, William Howard Powell, 26, Friday night in Maryland.
The couple, as of the last report was in custody at the Prince George County Jail, and was waiting to be returned to Georgia.
According to the Jesup Police Department, warrants for the couple’s arrested included, murder, two for aggravated assault, and one for armed robbery, in an incident that took place Nov. 13 in Jesup.
