KLB and the Great Georgia Pollinator
pollinator 2021

The Great Georgia Pollinator Census is happening on August 20th & 21st, 2021. The census is done to create or add to sustainable pollinator habitat across Georgia.

The census also helps to increase our citizens’ entomological literacy and generate valuable data about our pollinator populations.

The Great Georgia Pollinator Census is hosted by the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension. They are allowing Georgia residents to help researchers find out what’s the buzz with insect pollinators in the state. Keep Liberty Beautiful encourages the Liberty County community to participate at their home or work on Friday, August 20, 2021. On Saturday, August 21, 2021, from 10:00am to 12:00pm, at the KLB office, we will host a fun time conducting the census and pollinator activities.

To perform the census, each Georgia citizen is asked to visit plants in their gardens or other spots frequented by insect pollinators and count how many pollinators they observe in a 15-minute window. Those who participate then submit their counts online via the census website at https:// GGaPC.org.

This will be the third census that has been held. The Great Georgia Pollinator Census in 2019 was a great success with schools, families, and community members. In 2020, due to the pandemic, Keep Liberty Beautiful and the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension did a virtual event. Only families were encouraged to participate at their homes. This was a fun time to get out of the house and help the environment by counting pollinators.

The data collected from the pollinator census

are currently being used by UGA researchers for economic valuation studies of pollination. Some are also used in classrooms for student projects. As a result of the census, 3,755 people representing 124 counties participated in the 2020 census, collecting close to 82,600 insect visit observations. Additionally, 525 new pollinator gardens have been created as part of the project. The plan is to grow the census each year, educate Georgia citizens, and add more participants and pollinator habitats.

Some of the insects that we will be watching for during the census are: Carpenter bees Bumblebees Honey bees Small bees Wasps Flies Butterflies/moths Other insects We hope you will join us on August 21, 2021, to conduct the census from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Please RSVP at https://bit. ly/pollencensus to ensure we have enough supplies and food.
