Liberty preps for growth

How will Liberty County and its municipalities handle future growth?
That question is the main topic to be addressed during an annual community-planning workshop in March when the county’s comprehensive growth plan — a state-required document now being updated — is discussed.
Each government unit in Georgia is required by the state’s Department of Community Affairs to develop a comprehensive growth plan. The plan acts as guide for community growth and development and is meant as a “roadmap” for the delivery of services to its citizens.
Communities are also required to develop short-term work programs, as part of this process, outlining how each will achieve certain goals and objectives of the plan within a five-year period.
This year’s workshop will focus on updates to the comprehensive plan and specifics of the short-term work program.
Representatives from the Liberty Consolidated Planning Commission and the firm of Lott & Barber, who was chosen by the Department of Community Affairs to prepare the Coastal Comprehensive Plan, will lead the session.
“Participation from many sectors is needed to ensure comprehensiveness in the process,” County Administrator Joey Brown said in his invitation message for the workshop.
“As you can see, this year's workshop promises to be both challenging and productive. It will require each of us to look into the crystal ball and decide exactly what we want the county to look like in the future and how we propose to get it there. Please come prepared to work hard, work together and develop a plan that will allow us to achieve a high quality of life in Liberty County. There is no doubt that if we will do this, we can sit in that rocking chair one day, smile and think 'you know I'm proud to have been involved in establishing that roadmap to success.'”
The group will meet March 21-23 at the King and Prince on St. Simons Island. Registration costs $210, is due by March 1 and should be sent to
