Edwards on agenda for today's Hinesville city council meeting
Set to begin at 3 p.m.

Hinesville City Manager Billy Edwards is on the agenda for today’s council meeting.

Edwards, who was suspended two weeks without pay June 1 by a 3-1 vote of Hinesville city council, is the topic of a request by District 1 councilwoman Diana Reid to “have the City Attorney draft an amendment” to clarify language in the city ordinance regarding the “appointment and removal of the City Manager,” according to the city's meeting workbook available on its website.

Reid was one of the three council members who voted for Edward’s suspension after an executive session that may have been illegal.

A reason has not been given for the suspension, which ended June 15. Attempts by the Courier to gain access to recordings of the executive session held prior to the vote to suspend Edwards have been denied. Under law, those recordings are not public except in court.

Also on today’s agenda is a review of Edwards' “evaluation timeline,” according to an agenda item from District 3 councilmember Vicky Nelson, who also voted for Edwards' suspension.

It calls for the evaluation by council members to be finished by Friday. Mayor Allen Brown and Nelson are then to meet prior to consolidate councilmembers’ evaluations on July 31.  The council will then hold closed meetings Aug. 3 and Aug. 17 to discuss the evaluations, first as a board and then with Edwards, who has been city manager for more than 30 years.
