An accident Friday evening snarled traffic on U.S. Highway 84 and Darsey Road in Hinesville after a driver failed to yield a stop sign, according to Hinesville Police Department accident investigators.

A white GMC Terrain, driven by Katherine Godwin, 23, slammed into another vehicle after attempting to turn left onto Highway 84, sending two of its passengers to the hospital, including one who is pregnant. It is unknown how many passengers were in the other SUV that ended up on the golf course across from Darsey Road.

“It is still under investigation,” Cpl. S. Hensler said of the 5:28 p.m. accident.

Hensler would not comment on whether anyone died or sustained serious injuries.

“I know I’m young, I know I’m female, but I am not stupid,” Godwin said. She remarked that she was unhappy with the way she was treated by law-enforcement officials. “I swear there was nothing in the other lane.”

Godwin attempted to turn left after a car in the right lane indicated it was turning onto Darsey Road. A brown SUV apparently was in the blind spot of the turning vehicle, Godwin said.

“Be careful,” Hensler warns other drivers. “Take your time.”

Cynthia Rozier, who has lived on Darsey Road for two years, said she sees accidents at the intersection about twice a week.

“Usually it’s just a fender-bender, but there are a lot and usually it’s people trying to turn. It may not look like it because it’s small, but it is a busy street,” Rozier said of Darsey Road.
