The man killed in a Friday car wreck on Highway 17 near Riceboro has been identified as Thomas Bell, 55, of Hinesville.

Georgia State Patrol Trooper Lyle Thurmond said the wreck happened shortly before 11 p.m. near Lewis Frasier Road’s intersection with Highway 17.

Thurmond said it appeared the 1996 Ford Thunderbird was headed south when it drifted off the east side of the road and hit a tree.

A friend of the family, Angie Smith, posted on Facebook that Bell suffered a heart attack while driving.

She has set up a fundraising account at gofundme.com to raise $2,000 to help Bell’s mother pay for his funeral.
