More than 350 homeless students attended public schools in Liberty and Long counties last year, according to the Liberty Regional Homeless Coalition.

Now, the LRHC wants to make sure homeless students in both counties have “appropriate and usable clothing for the upcoming school year,” and will be collecting school clothes and monetary donations for homeless students at 21 locations through Aug. 6.

“Other than the Good Friday Walk, this is our first targeted homeless student project,” said LRHC President Jim McIntosh. “Some churches and organizations have done school clothing drives, but they have been, to the best of my knowledge, for general distribution. This one is for the homeless students.”

Among the items being sought are new and slightly used school uniforms for Liberty County schools and regular clothing in Long County. The LHRC needs clothing to fit students ranging in size from pre-K to 12th grade, and include everything from polo shirts, khaki pants and skirts to new socks and underwear. The LRHC asks that folks refrain from donating used underwear.

Monetary donations are also welcome and can be made at www.gofundme.comhomelesschildrensupport.

The schools will distribute the clothing. Money raised will be given to the school systems as needed to support homeless student programs.
