Long County fire being investigated as arson

Authorities say a fire that burned a Long County home Thursday was intentionally set.

The Long County Sheriffs Office, Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the state fire marshal’s office are investigating the fire, which burned a home on the 1800 block of Frasier Harris Road, according to Long County Sheriff Craig Nobles.

He said the home’s owners, Richard and Shelly Worthy, were able to escape the fire with no injuries.

Nobles said evidence at the home led investigators to determine the fire was arson, and both the state fire marshal’s office and GBI were called in to help. A $10,000 reward from the state fire marshal’s office is offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who set the fire.

Nobles said the home was declared a total loss and the Worthys had no insurance.

Anyone with information is asked to call either the Long County Sheriff’s Office at 912-545-2118 or GBI at 912-729-6198.
