Long time counsel drops school board

The law firm of Jones, Osteen and Jones will no longer represent the Liberty County School System.
Liberty County School System Executive Director for Maintenance and Operations Jason Rogers confirmed that the district received a notice of termination on Dec. 7, from Carl Varnedoe.
Rogers reported that the letter indicated “effective immediately Jones, Osteen & Jones and all members of the firm hereby terminate their individual and collective representation of the Liberty County School District and its governing board.”
Rogers said that, at this point, the board has not appointed a replacement. He said the firm did not specify the reason for the termination. Repeated calls and emails to the firm for comment were not returned.
LCSS Board Chair Lily Baker said the move was unexpected.
“The law firm has my greatest respect as we move forward to obtain the services of another local law firm within our area,” she said.
