Long County Board of Elections Chairwoman Vanessa Cunningham said Monday that Marvin Chesser officially was declared the winner of the District 2 Ludowici City Council race.

Chesser defeated incumbent Jim Fuller by one vote; Chesser garnered 50 votes while Fuller received 49. Last week, the unofficial tally gave Chesser 50 votes and Fuller 48, but citywide provisional ballots still had to be counted. After the board of elections reviewed the ballots, Fuller gained one more vote, but it wasn’t enough to defeat the challenger.

“I want to thank all of the people who gave me their support in this election,” Chesser said. “I will always try to do the right thing and what is best for the city. I also will do all I can to work with both the other members of the city council and the mayor.”

The members of the new Ludowici City Council are Mary Hamilton (District 1), Chesser (District 2), Frank McClelland Jr. (District 3), Johnny Manning (District 4) and Gwendolyn Davis (District 5). James Fuller is the mayor.
