Midway legionnaire leads district

The 1st District, Department of Georgia, American Legion had its 2016 convention at Post 90 in Statesboro Saturday.

Posts that received 100-plus membership streamers  were Claxton’s 60, Metter’s 108, Sylvania’s 116, Savannah’s 135, Pembroke’s 164, Hinesville’s 168, Springfield’s 209, Midway’s 321, Pooler’s 322 and Savannah’s 500.

After the awards presentation, membership elected legionnaires to lead the district during 2016-17. The new officers are District Commander Dennis P. Fitzgerald from Post 321, Midway; Senior Vice Commander Tommy Pierce from Post 209, Springfield; and Junior Vice Commanders Don Hall of Post 103, Swainsboro; Willie Bradley from Post 500, Savannah; Ben Van Buren from Post 168, Hinesville, and Ernest Mitchell from Post 164, Pembroke.

After the election, Fitzgerald appointed the following legionnaires Adjutant Rich Noel from Post 135, Savannah; Finance Officer Romine from Post 321, Midway; and Judge Advocate George Walker from Post 154, Tybee Island.

Fitzgerald said the positions of chaplain, sergeant at arms, service officer and numerous other committee chairpersons will be filled within the next few weeks. He said all district offices, including all junior vice commanders, will be filled in time for the the Department of Georgia Convention in June.
