A small, one-person plane made an emergency landing Thursday morning in McIntosh County.

According to McIntosh Sheriff’s Office Maj. Ty Poppell, the pilot, who has not been identified, was flying from an unknown location in Florida to Walterboro, South Carolina. The plane was low on fuel, either the result of a malfunction or fuel leak. Shortly after 9 a.m., the pilot made an emergency landing near the northbound ramp of Interstate 95 at exit 49. Poppell said the pilot was not injured, and traffic on the exit was not blocked.

The Federal Aviation Administration was called in to determine what caused the forced landing.
