Qualifying for a special election to fill the vacant Liberty County Commission District 2 seat will be this week.

The election, called by Liberty County Board of Elections and Registration Chairman Richard E. “Dicky” Braun, will be in conjunction with the Nov. 6 general election.

Former Commissioner Donald Lovette vacated the seat in May as required by law when he qualified to run for chairman.

According to County Attorney Kelly Davis, the elected candidate will take office as soon as practicable because he or she would be filling term that runs through Dec. 31, 2014.

Those elected in the regular races where term are expiring — such as BoC Districts 4, 5 and 6 — will take office Jan. 1.

Candidates wishing to qualify in the partisan race can do so between 9 a.m. Wednesday and noon Friday. The qualifying fee is $54.
