Socks for Seniors, a nonprofit community-service project that organizes, collects and distributes new socks for senior citizens, is underway locally.

The purpose is to bring holiday cheer — along with a pair of socks — to warm the hearts and cover the cold feed of seniors living alone or in nursing homes. Local organizer Allenhurst Mayor Thomas Hines and his family have placed donation boxes at SNF Chemtall, 1 Chemical Plant Road in Riceboro; Sheppards Mini Storage & U-Haul, 4407 Highway 84 in Allenhurst; and Allenhurst Presbyterian Church, 30 Church St.

“A lot of times, seniors are forgotten. They’re passed over because of the younger kids and all the Christmas stuff going on, and a lot of the people in the nursing homes don’t have family that come all the time to see them,” Hines said. “We don’t want them to be forgotten, and we don’t want their feet cold. We just wanted to get involved with making the seniors not feel neglected during the Christmas holiday. We’re just trying to put a little of the Christmas spirit out there for people who don’t always have it.”

Donation boxes will be collected Monday. Socks will be distributed at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Coastal Manor in Ludowici.

Hines said any variety of socks can be donated, including tube socks and holiday-themed socks. Any leftover socks will be donated to seniors not living in a nursing home and people who are homeless.
