The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man suspected of lewd conduct with a child after asking the public’s help in identifying him.

The sheriff’s office asked for help identifying the man Tuesday. Within the next 24 hours, tips came in identifying the suspect as Benjamin Rios Tovar of Dallas, according to an LCSO news release.

He was interviewed, which led to an arrest warrant being issued charging him with child molestation, the release says.

Tovar was taken into custody Thursday on Fort Stewart.

“The cooperation of the public was vital in the identification and apprehension of Mr. Tovar,” the sheriff’s office said.

During an interview with detectives, Tovar admitted to a “flashing” incident before the off-post lewd-conduct incident, according to the sheriff’s office. LCSO contacted Fort Stewart Military Police, and Tovar was arrested Thursday based on a warrant for child molestation.

MP investigators interviewed Tovar before releasing him to the LCSO, the sheriff’s office said.

Tovar appeared before a magistrate Friday morning, and his bond was set at $11,100.  He is currently being housed at the Liberty County Jail, according to the jail website.

Fort Stewart spokesman Kevin Larson said Military Police also charged Tovar on Friday in connection with an indecent-exposure incident that reportedly occurred on the installation’s golf course. That is a federal charge because the incident is alleged to have taken place on a military installation.
