Challenger Willie Thompson beat incumbent Andy Fuller in Tuesday’s runoff race for the 3rdDistrict Long County Commission seat.

According to board of elections member Patricia Smith-Johnson, the unofficial results showed Thompson receiving 101 votes (55.49 percent) and Fuller receiving 81 votes (44.51 percet). A runoff was required after no candidate garnered more than 50 percent in the March 12 general primary.

Though Thompson took the majority of the votes cast in that election, he was one vote shy of receiving more than 50 percent. In original primary race, he took 83 votes, Fuller took 54 votes, and Walt Pelton took 29 votes.

Thompson’s victory means that all of the challengers swept the incumbents in the Long County Commission races. The new commissioners are Gerald Blocker in District 1, Robert Long in District 2, Thompson in District 3, Kent Hall in District 4 and Dwight Gordon in District 5.  The group will be sworn in after the state certifies the May 7 general election.
