One man spent Christmas behind bars and faces numerous charges while another man has turned himself in after a car plowed into a Hinesville residence Tuesday.

Garvari T. Dixson-Lewis, 30, was charged with driving under the influence, racing, reckless driving and open container after he drove his 2006 Dodge Charger into the living room of a home on Lakeview Drive around 12:47 a.m. Tuesday, according to an incident report filed by Hinesville Police Department Cpl. Scott Hensler.

Dixson-Lewis allegedly was racing his car when he lost control at a curve and went careening through the house’s front door and window.

According to the report, the driver of the other vehicle Dixson-Lewis allegedly was racing against, Craig Howard, voluntarily turned himself in to authorities later Tuesday. He was charged with racing.

The house was occupied by seven people at the time of the incident, but no one was injured.

One resident, Juan Gandia, told WTOC, “It sounded like thunder right inside the house,” adding he had stepped inside minutes before the front door was smashed. The family said the car missed them by a foot, and the incident has changed their lives forever.

The Red Cross is assisting the family.
