SAVANNAH — United Way Hands On Savannah is seeking nominations for the 2011 Volunteer Recognition Awards, a program that honors extraordinary volunteer work in Bryan, Chatham, Effingham and Liberty counties. The deadline for nominations is March 8.

The awards will be presented at the 32nd annual Volunteer Recognition Awards Luncheon at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, April 27, at Savannah Station, 601 Cohen St., Savannah.

Awards will be given in the following categories: adult individual, youth individual (18 years or younger), adult group (three or more volunteers) and youth group (three or more volunteers 18 years or younger). A panel of community leaders will select a winner and a finalist in each of the four categories. A $500 scholarship grant will be given to the youth individual winner, and a $250 scholarship grant will be given to the youth individual finalist.

The Herschel V. Jenkins Volunteer of the Year Award, which honors the late Herschel V. Jenkins, a visionary and a community building volunteer who believed in the work of the United Way and the importance of giving back to the community, will be selected from winners in those four categories. The winner’s nonprofit program will be awarded $1,000.

Additionally, United Way Hands On Savannah will give the Anne Moy Education Award to an individual or group for outstanding dedication and service in the field of education. The award is dedicated in memory of the late Anne Moy, a retired educator and United Way volunteer.
