At its Oct. 27 meeting in Savannah, the Georgia Board of Natural Resources appointed Don “Rick” Gardner and re-appointed H.E. “Sonny” Timmerman to the Coastal Marshlands Protection Committee and the Shore Protection Committee.
Gardner, a resident of Richmond Hill, is owner of Don Gardner Associates, an independent aviation consulting company, and has also served as the Bryan County commissioner for District 5 since 2003.
Gardner’s appointment fills a vacancy created by the resignation of Richard Eckburg for the period of November 2010 through December 2011. Gardner will be eligible for reappointment to an additional four-year term prior to December 2011.
Timmerman, an engineer and planning director from Liberty County, is beginning his second four-year term.
The Coastal Marshlands Protection Committee was created in 1970 with the passage of state law that protects the public trust tidal wetlands. The Shore Protection Committee was created in 1979 to protect the sand sharing system – the beach, dunes, sand bars and shoals. The committees issue permits for waterfront development, such as marinas and community docks, residential and commercial shorefront development, beach crossovers, beach nourishment and bank stabilization. The same five committee members serve on both committees, which meet simultaneously.
