Long Commission, BoE tackle business
Placeholder Image

There was little business to address at the Long County Board of Education’s December meeting, but the panel did take another step toward preparing for a new high school. After a PowerPoint presentation by Craig Buckley, Buckley, & Associates, the board voted to approve the construction management at risk process.
In other school business:
• Superintendent Dr. Robert Waters said he will participate in the interview process for hiring a new high school football head coach.
• Board members agreed to install air conditioners on any new school bus that is purchased.
• Waters asked the board members to nominate people to serve on the ESPLOST committee.
• The Walker Middle School and the Long County High School Future Business Leaders of America clubs were congratulated after they received national recognition for two projects. The projects included a book drive that resulted in more than 300 books being donated to a local shelter and a blanket-gathering campaign. Students collected blankets to donate to people in need through their “Warm a Life” effort.

Commission tackles issues at December meeting
The Long County Board of Commissioners also met in December and addressed several business matters. The commission:
• Voted to give $1,000 to the Long County Toys for Tots program.
• Voted to appoint Jimmy Hicks to the Long County Planning and Zoning Board.
• Voted to adopt the Long County soil erosion-sedimentation pollution control ordinance.
• Voted to adopt a resolution for the Georgia Storm Water Management Manual as the local storm water management design manual for urbanized areas in the county.
• Voted to adopt the Long County illicit discharges and illegal connections ordinance.
• Voted to appoint Roger Houston as a liaison between the commission and developer Bill Nutting for the contract awarded to Nutting for building two football fields at the Long County Recreation Department.
• Heard a complaint from Denise Walker who said she requested a list of delinquent county taxpayers Sept. 24 but never received it. Commissioners told Walker that new software was being purchased to generate an accurate list through the tax commissioner’s office.
• Heard complaints from Jim Hudson who lives on Wilkerson Road regarding the road’s poor conditions. He also said too many people speed on the road. The commission chairman said the issues would be addressed with the road maintenance crew.
• Planned a work session to create an ordinance to establish guidelines on using wrecker and towing services in the county. Long County Sheriff Cecil Nobles and Deputy Craig Nobles said creating an ordinance similar to the one Liberty County uses would be a good idea.
