Long County hosts Earth Day

LUDOWICI — Long County had its annual Earth Day celebration no April 18 and around 150 people came out to enjoy the day.
The event kicked off that morning at the Long County Recreation Park, and lasted until 2 p.m.
The theme was “Go Green, Long County” and there was something for people of all ages to participate in.
Long County Commissioner Wallace Shaw said, “The exhibits and demonstrations were both entertaining and educational. I thought it went really well, and I think everyone who came out thoroughly enjoyed it.”
There were drawings and prizes given out throughout the day, included two $25 gift cards and an mp3 player.
The conservation demonstrations included a waste water management exhibit, an anti-pollution display, a Georgia Forestry Commission display, and a booth set up by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
Three popular areas for the kids included an inflatable slide, a moonwalk and a flavored ice machine.
There were also munchies, including hotdogs, hamburgers, and chips.
Several emergency agencies took part; the Ludowici Police Department, the Ludowici/Long County Volunteer Fire Department and the Fort Stewart Hazardous Materials Team.
Sponsors included the LPD, Ludowici Drugs, Georgia Power, Ludowici Bank, One-Stop Express, Bradley Pest Control, Altamaha Federal Credit Union, Ludowici Meats, Coastal Concrete, The Heritage Bank and the Long County Commission.
The Long County Code Enforcement Office organized the event. According to Michelle Poppell, “Everyone had a good time today, and I am very thankful to all the people who came out, and all who help with the day.”
Shaw added, “Today was a beautiful day, I wish more people would have come out, and hopefully next year, it will be even bigger than it was this year.”
