The kids of Long County received a sweet treat this past Tuesday when Long County’s Farm Bureau paid a visit to the Long County Public Library.

The Georgia Foundation for Agriculture and a representative from Coastal Electric Cooperative, who was there representing the Georgia Electric Membership Cooperatives (GA EMC), were also on hand for the event as they promoted agriculture to the kids of the community. They donated copies of the children’s book “Tales of the Dairy Godmother: Chuck’s Ice Cream Wish.” The book was written by Viola Butler and illustrated by Ward Jenkins and tells the story of Chuck who is taken on a magical adventure by his “Dairy Godmother” to a dairy farm. He discovers how ice cream is made and develops a deeper appreciation for how is favorite food is made.

Another book that was read to the kids was Mrs. Wishy-Washy’s Farm by Joy Cowley which tells about a little mouse and how his imagination makes his bedtime so exciting as he takes a fantasy journey to meet several different animals. Many of them are farm animals such as pigs, cows, and ducks.

Bethany Akridge, Communications Coordinator for Coastal Electric Cooperative in midway, expressed such enthusiasm for the event. “The reason Coastal Electric is here on behalf of GA EMC is because GA EMC is the state-wide organization for GA’s Electric co-ops,” she said.

Reagan Odum who is a member-elected director for Coastal Electric also expressed similar enthusiasm. “One of our co-operative principles is concern for community,” she said.

In addition to these two organizations, Chik-Fil-A of Hinesville also joined in on the festivities by presenting ice cream to the children complete with their cow mascot. Emily Golden, Marketing Director, was very happy to be involved in the event and saw the event as an opportunity to show care for the kids of Long County. “We see this as a perfect opportunity to express how much we care about our kids in the community and are committed to making a significant positive impact on them,” she said.

The kids were also treated to a cow puppet project and gift bags which featured a book, a gift card, a cookie, and a sticker.
