FORT BENNING — A draft report shows that Stewart County is the top choice for Fort Benning to expand its training area.

A summary report released by the Army focused on Stewart County from a list of five alternatives that also considered Marion, Webster, Harris and Talbot counties in Georgia and Russell County in Alabama.

Fort Benning is seeking to expand as the U.S. Armor School completes it move from Fort Knox, Ky.

The move is expected to bring 7,500 more soldiers to the post that also trains infantry and cavalry soldiers in basic and advanced combat skills.

The report noted that Fort Benning is short of 228,836 acres for maneuver training but could achieve sufficient training with a 45 percent increase in space.
