Families get new method to contact deployed soliders

As families at Fort Stewart go through the emotional experience of deployment, Fort Stewart’s Army Community Service group is offering families a new family communications portal called Connect And Join to help ease the communications burdens during deployment.
Representatives of Connect And Join will be at Fort Stewart’s Family Readiness Center discussing the site today and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Connect And Join ( is a subscription-based family Web site community that allows for private, frequent and meaningful interactions between the deployed service member and family members at home. Designed to help families stay connected during deployment, all families with a deploying family member will gain free access to the service for a year, along with training on how to use the service in a number of ways.
Connect And Join founder, Linda Dennis, developed Connect And Join after viewing A Tour of Duty: Kosovo, a personal account presented by Col. James Lockemy of the South Carolina Guard. As a former Air Force wife, Dennis identifies with the strain that deployment and reentry into the family can put on a relationship. To continue to show her support and admiration for the troops, Dennis also founded Connect with the Troops and Month of the Military Child Arts & Crafts and Scrapbooking Extravaganza. Each of these projects offers an emotional and creative outlet to military service members and their families.
The event is being coordinated by Bess Stone, mobilization and deployment specialist, for Fort Stewart. She has worked in the mobilization and deployment program at Fort Stewart for four years. With more than 10 years of experience with the armed forces, Stone has a great appreciation of the support Connect And Join’s service has to offer to our troops. Stone’s husband is an active duty soldier and they have two children.
