Former 3rd ID officer headed to Afghanistan

U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Richard Formica, whom locals will remember as a colonel when he commanded the artillery at Fort Stewart from 1998-2000, has been assigned to command the Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan, U.S. Central Command, Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
Formica goes to the Afghanistan job from the Pentagon, where he was director of force management for the deputy chief of staff.
When he left Fort Stewart in 2000, Formica went to the Pentagon where he worked on European politico-
military affairs for the joint staff. Formica received his first star while he was commanding the artillery for III Corps at Fort Hood, Texas.
