An Army physician’s assistant died June 17 of non-combat related injuries while deployed to Mosul, Iraq.

Capt. Michael P. Cassidy, 41, of Simpsonville, S.C., was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 9th Field Artillery, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart.

Fort Stewart spokesperson Kevin Larson said Cassidy joined the Army in March 2003.  He arrived at Fort Stewart in June 2009, Larson said. This was his first deployment.

According to the Greenville News, Cassidy is survived by his wife, Johanna, and daughters Catherine, 10, and Amber, 9.

Johanna Cassidy reportedly told the Greenville News she last saw her husband when he was on mid-tour leave in April. She told the South Carolina paper her husband served in the National Guard as a medic and later joined the army following the 9/11 attacks.

Michael Cassidy is the fourth 2nd brigade soldier to have died while deployed to Iraq in the past three months.

1st Lt. Robert Collins, 24, and Spc. William Blount, 22, of Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd ID, died on April 7.  The two men were killed in action when enemy forces attacked their vehicle with an improvised explosive device.

Staff Sgt. Amilcar H. Gonzalez, 26, died on May 21 in Ash Shura, Iraq, when insurgents attacked his unit with small-arms fire. He, also, was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd ID.
