Effective immediately Newman Pool at Fort Stewart and Tominac Fitness Center Pool at Hunter Army Airfield are closed.  

Garrison commander, Col. Todd A. Buchs, said today the year-round, indoor pools are immediately affected due to the lack of required drain covers in order to comply with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act, requiring all commercial pools, spas and Jacuzzi drains to have safety covers today, or they must close.   
Buchs said he regrets this inconvenience to patrons.

"The drain covers are on backorder," he said.  "This is a very new requirement, and the size drain covers we need are just not available on the market and have to be manufactured from scratch.  We have already ordered ours and will install them as soon as they arrive."  

Based on receipt of the required parts, the pools could be closed for up to 60 days or longer due to the manufacturing backlog.
