A mother and her daughter are displaced following a fire which destroyed their home Monday afternoon in the unincorporated area of Midway.

According to Liberty County Fire Chief, Brian Darby, the fire began around 12:30 p.m. at a residence on the 200 block of Claudia Lane.  Darby said when fire units from Liberty County Fire Services Station 12 arrived, they encountered a mobile home which was engulfed in flames.  Darby said stations from Riceboro, Midway and a fire team from the Department of Corrections were called in to assist.

Darby said the biggest challenge in fighting the fire was that the home had a dual roof.  The firefighters had to work around a tin roof that had been built over a shingled roof keeping the fire and heat between the two roofs creating a vortex.  The fire was running back and forth in the attic and crawl spaces of the structure according to Darby making it difficult for firefighters to extinguish the blaze.

Darby said the 19-year-old daughter and her mother were not home at the time of the fire.  Several firefighters sustained cuts and bruises fighting the fire.

Darby said, the cause of the fire is unknown and investigators will examine what might have caused it.

The women lost everything in the fire and Darby said he will be using social media to make the public aware where donations can be dropped off to assist the family.
