Name of teen shooting suspect released
Crime scene tape

District Attorney Tom Durden released the name of the 16-year-old that allegedly shot and killed his father on Aug.12. James E. McCray Jr. has been charged with murder and will be tried as an adult.

Earlier in August deputies were dispatched to a home on the 300 block of Wilkins Road in Midway, in reference to a gunshot victim. Upon arrival James McCray, 43, was found dead at the scene. The investigation led to the arrest of the victim’s 16-year-old son McCray Jr.

Due to being a juvenile, if convicted on the charge of murder, McCray Jr. would be facing life in prison instead of the death penalty. McCray Jr.'s next appearance in court is a preliminary and bond hearing on Sept. 5 according to the D.A.'s office.

The Liberty County Sheriff's Office was unable to provide a photo. The image was provided by the gofundme page started by McCray Jr.'s family to raise money for his legal fees.
