The Liberty County Development Authority’s annual update to the Chamber of Commerce included a twist this year — previously undisclosed developments, including a large spec building going up in Tradeport East Business Center.

BlueScope Properties Group is constructing a 645,000+ square-foot building just south of the 500,000 SF Hankook Tire distribution center in LCDA’s premier industrial park. BlueScope is a private developer headquartered in Kansas City, Mo.

The availability of the spec building in Tradeport East will definitely bolster chances of attracting new jobs to Liberty County, according to LCDA CEO Ron Tolley, CEcD.

“We’re routinely contacted by companies that are looking for existing buildings so they can begin operations quickly,” Tolley affirmed when asked following the COC’s Progress Through People Luncheon on Jan. 13. “This space and the adjacent 600,000+ square feet of available space in a 1,400,000 SF building recently completed by Safavieh will definitely be magnets getting people to consider Liberty County as a possible location.”

Hooker Furnishings opened a distribution center for its Home Meridian International line of products in 800,000 square feet of that 1.4 million SF building in November. The new Safavieh building and landing Hooker Furnishings were among LCDA’s major accomplishments during the past year. Tolley also touted completion of a 500,000-gallon, elevated water tank to supplement Tradeport East’s existing 200,000-gallon, ground level tank.

The other upcoming development highlighted by Tolley is a new EMS facility being built by the county on property donated by the LCDA in Tradeport West Business Park on U.S. 17 south of Midway.
