One man was killed and another seriously injured when they fell approximately 35 feet in a freak accident at a construction site on Hampton Island.
According to Liberty County Sheriff Det. Brian Barnes, the accident occurred around 1:20 p.m., when four construction workers were preparing to come down from a roof where they were apparently doing stucco work on a chimney.
Barnes said the men climbed into a forklift with a scaffold rig and began their descent. As the lift was coming down there was a popping sound and a jerking motion, causing two of the men to plunge to the ground. The other two men were unharmed.
Units from the Riceboro Volunteer Fire Department were called to the scene to provide assistance. Liberty EMS rushed the injured man to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, according to Barnes.
The men work for Sailer Stone Stucco in South Carolina. Their identities were not released pending notification of family members.
A call to Lou Hammond and Associates, Hampton Island's PR firm, has not been returned. The Courier is attempting to contact Sailer Stone Stucco for comments.
