City of Hinesville and Liberty County officials recently hosted a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the upcoming construction of Irene Baker Thomas Park in Hinesville.
The park, named after the late grandmother of Hinesville Councilman Charles Frasier, will feature a skate park, a playground and pavilions, a walking path and a lake for fishing and boating, Assistant City Manager Kenny Howard said.
Following the wishes of the city, Thomas sold the land to the city several years ago, and Frasier was eager and happy to see the park come to fruition, he said.
“This park will benefit the people of our city, and it will be a great addition to the recreation of Hinesville. I wish my grandmother was here to see it, but this park is a sentimental and wonderful way to commemorate her,” Frasier said.
During the ceremony, speakers, including Frasier, Howard, Mayor Thomas Ratcliffe and Commission Chairman John McIver, talked about the importance of bringing the community together. They noted the park would significantly aid in unifying Hinesville.
The construction of the $540,000 park will commence shortly, and is expected to be completed within the next seven to eight months, Howard said.
The funding for this project came from some grant money, but the majority came from SPLOST funding, Frasier said.
