POOLER — With the ringing in of the New Year comes some new changes for the half-century old Oglethorpe Speedway Park. In a letter sent to NASCAR, the speedway after a 22-year history with NASCAR declined to renew their sanction for the 2007 season.
“In an ongoing effort to keep stock car racing affordable for both the competitors and fans in this area, we will now focus our efforts in a different direction”, Andy Stone, Vice-President of Oglethorpe Speedway Park, said. “The Stone family and Oglethorpe Speedway Park are proud of its 22 year partnership with NASCAR and that this decision is in no way a reflection of that past relationship.”
The 2007 points season will open on Friday, March 30, with racing every Friday night through September 7.
One of the changes to the Friday night program is that the Late Model division will be running on the second and fourth Friday’s of the month to allow for more drivers to compete in touring series and to have the opportunity to race at other local tracks. Hopefully, it will also attract new drivers to the speedway who can’t make it every Friday. On the nights late models are not racing, there will be a special event for one of the other four divisions or a special touring series will be on the ticket.
Special events already booked for 2007 at Oglethorpe Speedway are the Southern All-Stars Series in July, Sprint Cars in June, and Fastrack Late Models.
The first event for the New Year will be held Feb. 22 - 24, this event will host the Fastrack Late Model Series along with the ever-popular Young Guns racing in Late Models and Open Wheel Modifieds.
The following week, the speedway will welcome the AHRMA Motorcycles back on Wednesday, Feb. 28 and the AMA Flat Track Motorcycles on Friday, March 2.
The schedule of events at Oglethorpe Speedway Park can be found at www.ospracing.net .  This schedule will be updated as other special events or sponsors are added.  The website is also the quickest and easiest way to keep up on all the happenings at OSP.
