Staff report

Today is the last day to buy a Fort Stewart-Hunter combined hunting and fishing permit for the price of 55$. After today, the price will be $85.
Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield has several hunting and fishing opportunities on the installation open to all.
Dove season opens on Sept. 1. Archery deer season opens Sept. 8. Muzzleloaders deer season opens Oct. 6. And firearms deer season opens Oct. 20.
The Directorate of Morale Welfare and Recreation offers hunting and fishing permits for those who want to take advantage of the opportunities on the installation.
Civilians who purchase a combined hunting and fishing permit will pay $85 starting Sept. 1. This is the first time rates have been increased in three years. The increase will help pay program operating costs that have had inflationary increases, according to MWR officials.
Permits are good for one year from the date of purchase.
Fort Stewart is home to 350 species of wildlife, many of them favorites of hunters. All hunters on military must have completed an NRA-certified hunter safety course. Fort Stewart recognizes certificates issued by any state.
Officials also point out the unexploded ordnance caution in effect on Fort Stewart. The rule is, “If you didn’t drop it, don’t pick it up.”
Because Fort Stewart is an Army training facility and soldiers must train with many types of weapons and equipment to ensure they get the most realistic training possible, this training takes place throughout the installation. Some areas are used for “live fire” exercises. This means that there are some areas on post that may have munitions that have failed to explode or detonate. Although this is uncommon, it still happens on occasion.
The Army prohibits entry by unauthorized personnel into those areas where unexploded ordnance may be found. The Army has a special team of trained soldiers who disarm any unexploded ordnance.
