FOLKSTON — A ranger at the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge says the rains that have fallen over the Okefenokee Swamp during the past week appear to have missed the spots where they were most needed.

The Florida Times-Union reports (http://bit.ly/nWo1nh ) that Arthur Webster, supervisory ranger at the refuge, says the heaviest rains fell on the south end of the swamp where the nearly four-month-old Honey Prairie Fire has already burned and burned again. He says little rain has fallen on the extreme western side where the fire has been most active.

Webster says the fire has grown by only about 400 acres in a week's time. It was at 308,663 acres Sept. 16 and was measured at 309,079 acres Friday.

The refuge has not begun replacing its burned 4,000-foot boardwalk.
