Beginning Monday, area residents who like skeet/trap, archery, small arms and paintball enthusiasts can enjoy the shooting sports on Fort Stewart/Hunter Army Airfield, even if they are not military.

The change is in addition to other recreation facilities open on the base.
An order issued by Secretary of the Army Eric Fleming permits use by the general public of:
• Skeet/trap range, rifle and pistol range, archery range and paintball facilities on Fort Stewart.
• The skeet/trap range on Hunter.

Civilians, who do not have government-issued identification cards, are already permitted to use Hunter Golf Course and, at Fort Stewart, Taylors Creek Golf Course, Marne Bowling Center and Club Stewart, including its catering service and conference rooms.
All of the facilities are operated by the Army’s Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation.

Vehicle access passes are not necessary Fort Stewart’s shooting sports facilities, as all are outside access control points. Passes are needed to get to Taylors Creek Golf Course, Marne Bowling Center and Club Stewart.

Vehicle passes are needed for those who wish to use the Hunter’s range or golf course, which are within the gates. Information on how to get a gate pass is available at stewart.army.mil. “We would like the civilian community to know that they are welcome to use these facilities, which previously were unavailable to them,”

Outdoor Recreation’s Leisure Services Director Susan Chipple said. “We are proud of our facilities and try to keep our costs as low as possible.”
She added, “The facilities must be self-sustained and receive no government operating funds, so our community friends and neighbors actually are helping us to serve our soldiers and families when they use these facilities as individuals or groups.”
