Turnout appears to be light for today's runoff elections across the state.

Polls opened at 7 a.m. and are to remain open until 7 p.m.

In Liberty and Long counties, there were no local runoffs being contested. Races that were drawing the most attention were the race for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate. The winner between political newcomer businessman David Purdue and longtime U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston will take on Michelle Nunn, who is the Democratic nominee, in November.

U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss is vacating the seat.

There were also two runoffs to replace Kingston in the U.S. House. Buddy Carter and Dr. Bob Johnson are vying for the Republican nomination. While Brian Reese and Amy Tavio are trying for the Democratic nomination.

Both parties are also trying to sort out who will run for state superintendent of schools: Thomas Morgan of Austell and Valarie Wilson of Decatur for the Democrats and Mike Buck of Rome and Richard Woods of Tifton for the GOP.
