An investigation is ongoing in the death of area newborn that occurred last week.

According to a report filed by Hinesville Police Department Detective Doug Snider, authorities were notified early Tuesday morning of a deceased newborn when a woman went to visit a family friend in the 200 block of Robert Hill Road in Midway.  Authorities later discovered the child was born in the 900 block of Brett Drive in Hinesville.

The report states the child died shortly after being born in one of the apartments in the complex.  The child was wrapped up and taken Monday evening to Midway, along with the placenta which was found in the trunk of a woman's car.  The child’s body was taken to the GBI crime lab in Savannah, where an autopsy was conducted.

HPD Chief of Detectives Thomas Cribbs said they are waiting for the medical examiner’s report to determine the cause of death.
