McDonald’s on E.G. Miles Parkway in Hinesville was evacuated early Thursday afternoon when several restaurant patrons spotted a suspicious device in the restroom and reported it to the manager.

Delete-Merge ULiberty County Emergency Management Agency Director Mike Hodges said the item in question was a soft-drink can filled with an unknown liquid that had been suspended with string from the ceiling. Soldiers discovered it.

A Fort Stewart Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called to the scene, and they declared the incident a hoax, Hodges said.
McDonald’s reopened for business around 3 p.m.

The area around the restaurant was sealed off from traffic and pedestrians as the EOD team investigated.
