Tragedy struck Long County again Saturday with a second child dying.

Hannah Marie Foreman, 7, was pronounced dead on Saturday, after drowning in the Altamaha River, according to Wayne County Sheriff John Carter.

Earlier in the day, a child was fatally shot at home in the Twin Oaks Mobile Home Park on Griffin Road. This child's identification has not been released by authorities.

Carter said that the little girl was on an outing with her family at Jaycee Landing and was swimming off a sand barge. According to the sheriff, the child was apparently pulled under by the current and was unable to recover. An emergency call was placed to 911 at about 3:20 p.m., and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department along with a Wayne County EMS unit responded. Carter said that when the first responders arrived the child had been down for approximately 30 minutes. He said efforts were made to revive the child but were unsuccessful.

“There is no reason to suspect any foul play," the sheriff said. "And at this time it appears to have just been a tragic accident."

The other 7-year-old, a boy, reportedly was shot in the chest by a man who lived in the home with the child. An autopsy is to be performed on the child and the man is being questioned.
