An accident late Wednesday night sent a Hinesville man to the hospital and shook up several bus passengers and their driver.
According to Georgia State Patrol Trooper Adam Denton, Carl Nye, 51, was driving a bus with a group of students who just had completed Bible studies at Bethel Baptist Church in Richmond Hill. Nye had been traveling west on East Oglethorpe Highway around 10 p.m. when he attempted to turn left onto Robinson Street in Midway. As he waited for oncoming traffic to clear, the bus reportedly was  struck from behind by a 2005 Ford Escape driven by Andrew Heward, 29.  
Denton said that when Heward spotted the school bus, he applied his brakes and veered to right, slamming into the right rear of the bus.  Denton said Heward was trapped in his vehicle and was extracted by the Midway Volunteer Fire and Rescue department.  Riceboro Volunteer Fire and Rescue assisted.
Heward was flown by helicopter to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, where he was treated for a broken finger, broken wrist, a broken bone in his neck and tissue damage to his left shoulder. His condition is unknown.  
Heward was driving home from a meeting at the Midway Methodist Church when the accident occurred.
The bus driver and the four passengers — ages 12, 13, 17 and 20 — were not injured.      
The accident is under investigation.
